Channelling I and II
2002-2005
Computer Installation, including Streaming Web
2 computers, Satellite Connection and downlink, Internet, software, assorted
furniture
One computer seeks out different tv stations and changes stations every
minute. Sound from one channel is joined to the picture from another.
The second computer "listens" to the sound coming in and attempts to type
out, in real time, what is being said. This is done with a speech recognition
software and is then typed out in real-time as a subtitle at the bottom
of the picture. Exhibited as a installation with chairs, tv set, and coffee
table (which varies with each museum installation). The piece has been
show in English, Swedish, and Finnish (Subtitles) using different Speech
recognition engines.
